Earth (a poem) written in 1978

The earth seemed to live,
and I felt the throbbing pulse of life
as I reached out to grasp
that fistful of soil
I hold so tightly in my hand.

Quiet sounds of a breeze-filled
night pierced my soul,
as under a tree I knelt
and with tears of wonder
bathing my face
gazed into the starlit sky
to see
the beginnings of eternity
while holding
desperately
to the securing solidness
of that bit of you
I grasp.
